Welcome to THE BALANCE PROJECT: a series of relevant and refreshingly candid interviews featuring inspiring and accomplished women talking about balance. I’ve always been curious about how women I admire manage the tragically glorified “doing it all” craze. So I asked them. As I suspected, no one really does “it all.” Everyone’s making sacrifices somewhere. And that should make us all feel a little better. I hope the conversation will be steered toward that reality rather than toward the flawed and dangerous assumption that we should try—or even want to try—to perfectly do “it all.”

By the way, looking for THE BALANCE PROJECT novel that was inspired by these interviews? It’s here.

No. 115: Kimra Luna, Personal Branding & Online Business Strategist

Age: 29
Where I live:
 Riverside, CA
Job: Personal Branding & Online Business Strategist
Kids:
Oliver (6), Orion (3), and Sirius (7 months)

Kimra headshot 1 resizedHave you changed jobs or adjusted anything in your career to have more balance?
Outsourcing has changed our lives. Right now I have a team of people helping me out: a nanny, a personal chef, a housekeeper, a yard guy, two virtual assistants, and a copywriter.

Do you think having “it all” is realistic or overrated and why?
Realistic–right now I can do pretty much anything I want. Does that mean I have it all?

What part of “balance” can you just not seem to figure out?
As an online entrepreneur I’m a bit addicted to my Facebook groups—if I see someone ask a question I can’t help but answer it!

What part of “balance” are you getting better at?
Spending more time away from my business with my husband and kids–I’m much better at that than I was before.

Do you have a favorite time management tool, hack, or other strategy you use that helps you achieve balance?
For time management, I really like to use Google Calendar. I’m pretty much one of those people who schedules everything. If it’s not on the calendar, it basically doesn’t get done.

What was the best advice you ever heard on balance?
From a mentor/co-worker?
“Don’t be afraid to hire out.”
From your spouse/partner?
“Take more breaks.”
From your kids? “Play more.”

If you had one extra hour in each day and you couldn’t work or be with your family, how would you spend that hour?
Playing guitar–I’m not that great but I still love to play.

What do you wish you’d known when you were 20?
You know, I don’t think I should have known the things that I know now. I’m a massive believer in the journey, and I like to believe that everything comes along at the right time. The path I’m on is the path I’m meant to be on.

What do you hope to know by time you’re 60?
That deep down, all people are compassionate.

What one part of your home life do you wish you could outsource?
I already outsource pretty much everything!

Whose job do you wish you had?
I don’t. I already have the best job in the world–I get to help people for a living.

Whose job are you glad you don’t have?
The president’s.

Favorite books?
Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks.

What are you reading right now?
The Robb Report: Home & Style Magazine.

Biggest vices…
Activity? Watching Dr. Who, doing my make up and dying my hair, and singing.
Food? Dairy-free snickerdoodle almond ice cream.
Website? Facebook.

How many hours do you generally sleep at night during the week?
5-6. I have a tiny baby so he wakes me up whenever he wants to nurse.

What do you read every morning?
Facebook posts.

Complete the following sentences:
I think I: am doing what I’m meant to be doing with my life.
I wish I: could help more people.
My kids:
are my life.

Do you have a personal motto or favorite saying?
“Throw value around like confetti.”

Kimra resize 1About Kimra:
Kimra Luna is the last person you’d think would become a millionaire. Born and raised on government assistance with no college education or formal work experience and a husband in the same boat, Kimra looked for all the world like she would stay stuck squarely in a cycle of poverty.

After her husband eventually landed a job as a Fed-Ex driver, they decided she should use their tax refund to buy a computer to start an online business. Having never used one before, she watched the many free online resources to teach herself not just how to use it, but how to leverage her new tech savvy to grow a profitable online business. In just three short years, she went from surviving on food stamps to growing her business using webinars and Facebook ads and retiring her husband within three months of starting out online.

At 29 years old, Kimra earned close to a million dollars in sales in just under a year. She has inspired over 30,000 people to start their own freedom-based businesses through her paid courses and her Freedom Hacker’s Mastermind—one of the top Facebook groups for business owners looking to network and reach more people, which you can join for free.
