Welcome to THE BALANCE PROJECT: a series of relevant and refreshingly candid interviews featuring inspiring and accomplished women talking about balance. I’ve always been curious about how women I admire manage the tragically glorified “doing it all” craze. So I asked them. As I suspected, no one really does “it all.” Everyone’s making sacrifices somewhere. And that should make us all feel a little better. I hope the conversation will be steered toward that reality rather than toward the flawed and dangerous assumption that we should try—or even want to try—to perfectly do “it all.”

I have thought long and hard about the word balance, and I have realized that it has to be a fluid concept. Everyone needs change on a daily basis and so I have to be understanding and accepting of that. Once I had kids I decided to no longer travel over two weeks as an actor. I am fortunate that as an actor I am able to do this as I realize not everyone can. But the real change was when I co-founded my company (Foodstirs) with two other mom friends. This was a great opportunity to both spend time with my family while also showing them that it is possible to start a business from the ground up.

Do you think having “it all” is realistic or impossible and why?
I guess that depends on what your definition of having it all is. I wish there were more hours in the day on a daily basis. My answer to this conundrum is to make sure that wherever I am, at that moment to be fully present. When I am with my family, I make sure that I am 100 percent there, and when I am at work I show my job the same attention.

What part of “balance” can you just not seem to figure out?
Standing on one leg and juggling :).

What part of “balance” are you getting better at?
I try and really put down the phone and the work emails when I am with my family. To me, that is key. I wish I could completely leave my phone somewhere else, but then it would be hard to take pics. I am also learning to get up before the family so I can exercise. That was a tough one for me to swallow but I know that healthy me time is important as well.

Do you have a favorite time management tool, hack, or other strategy you use that helps you achieve balance that you would recommend to others, i.e. email filing/priority systems, etc.?
There is a way to prioritize emails in my inbox??? Will someone please teach me that? The most important lesson I have learned is that it takes a village. It took me a long time to accept that I can’t and shouldn’t do everything myself. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but actually a sign of strength.

If you had one extra hour in each day and you couldn’t work or be with your family, how would you spend that hour?
I would definitely combine beach time and exercise time (then cocktail time).

What do you wish you’d known when you were 20?
How quickly time flies.

What do you hope to know by the time you’re 60?
How to retire by 40.

What one part of your home life do you wish you could outsource?
Paying the bills. (I would like someone else to actually foot the bills—I don’t mind writing them.)

Whose job do you wish you had?
I am pretty happy with my life. I try not to look to the outside for my happiness.

Favorite books?
Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, and Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling,

What are you reading right now?
Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld.

Biggest vices…
Food? My husband’s cooking and Foodstirs treats.
Website? Go Fug Yourself.

How many hours do you generally sleep at night during the week?
7-8 hours.

What do you read every morning?
My emails and then my hometown papers.

I like to just add “for now” to everything. For instance, I am not getting enough sleep …“for now” and I am working too hard… “for now.”
